Books That Actually Help

I put together a list of books that actually helped me understand what it means to be human, why it’s so hard sometimes, and how to navigate it. You can find all these books, audiobooks, and workbooks in the Books section.

They’re all written in plain language that any human can understand – no therapy jargon that makes your brain hurt. The authors explain things in ways that feel like a smart friend talking to you over coffee, not like a clinical textbook.

These books blend science with real life. Most of the authors are clinical psychologists and therapists who’ve spent decades working with real humans in therapy. They’re teaching you what they’ve proven works in their offices. Others are researchers studying how humans actually function. They’re not guessing – they’re sharing what their studies found. The science is there – peer-reviewed studies, clinical experience, years of research. And these authors translate it into language that any human can understand. They share stories and examples that make sense in an engaging and often funny way.

All the books are packed with things you can actually DO. They don’t just tell you what’s going on or explain theories. They give you specific actions to try. Immediately. Small steps that actually help.

I tagged what format I recommend, but for most of the recommended books you’ll find book-books (on paper), ebooks, and audiobooks. I usually start with the audiobooks. And if I find the audiobook very insightful, I often get the ebook as well so I can highlight the most interesting takeaways for my notes to you.

Meow! A lot of those e-books and audiobooks are available for free at Hoopla and Libby apps with your library card.
