It’s all about your interpretation

Dear Human 💕,

It’s never the situation or the event itself that make you feel anything. It’s all about your interpretation and what you think about it.

Remember that what you think, feel, and do is inter-connected?

You can’t change the situation, but you can change how you think about it. And that will change how you feel.

Picture this: It’s already 8:34 pm and I didn’t get my squeeze treat yet. I will feel differently depending on what I think why my human is late.

  • I might feel irritated that they keep being late. It’s the third time this week. They don’t take their responsibilities seriously.
  • I might feel let down and sad. They know how much I am looking forward to my treat. How can they forget?
  • I might worry that they’re are in trouble or that something bad has happened to them. Why didn’t they come out of the bathroom yet?
  • I might feel thoughtful. Will the human withhold my treats? The vet said I should lose a pound. Is that really necessary?
  • I might feel anxious, as I start doubting myself. I am overthinking the situation. Did I do something to irritate the human? Is it because I jumped onto the game shelf again?
  • I might feel resentful, as I think they’re ignoring me. They are doing this on purpose.
  • I might feel understanding. They’ve been very busy. They are probably struggling taking care of everything. I will give them some cuddles later.

Whatever your first reaction is, it is only one out of many possible interpretations. It might be wrong. So, I always like to check it.

While you check it, watch out for those thinking errors the human brain tends to make. Call them out! Maybe it’s a bit too dramatic to think something happened to the human in the bathroom?

Ask yourself what are other possible explanations? Which one is the most likely? Can you change what you think?

I know you’ve been busy, as you had a lot to deal with this month. I’d still appreciate to get my treat by 8:30 pm sharp.

Yours,
Cat 🐾

P.S. how you react and think about a situation is shaped by all of the experiences you had in your lifetime. It also depends on what’s going on with you in that very moment. You’ll react differently when you’re sleep deprived and cranky compared to when you had a really good day.
