Learn from what you should have done

Dear Human 💕,

Sometimes s**t happens…or not.

I was wondering whether I should use the litter box in the office or the other one I prefer. The one that was sitting on top of the human toilet, because you put it up there when cleaning the floor earlier.

Meow.

I should have used the one in the office.

And you should’ve put the other one back on the floor.

We both learned something.

I am not mad at you, as I know you were in a hurry to get on your bike ride while it’s light out. And I sorry about the mess.

Yours,
Cat 🐾

P.S. When you catch yourself thinking what you should have done, don’t beat yourself up over it. Don’t tell yourself that you’re stupid or a bad human. Instead, ask yourself what you can learn from it. If you messed up, apologize. Then, move on.

P.P.S. One “should have” feeling is guilt. Guilt does not feel good, but it actually can be helpful. It tells you that you did something that feels wrong to you. And it drives you to make it right. Another “should have” feeling is shame. You’re telling yourself you’re a bad human. That’s never helpful. It’s paralyzing.
