Discover your inner compass
Dear Human 💕,
You seem a little lost and confused about which direction to take.
You’re not as lost as you think. You actually do have an inner compass that can guide you. It knows exactly where you need to go! You just forgot how to use it.
Your inner compass is calibrated by what matters most to you deep down. What is truly important to you.
Here’s how it works:
In any situation, pay attention to how you feel about it.
When something feels good to you—it excites you, it energizes you, it just feels right—that’s your compass pointing towards it.
For me, I feel energized watching birds from my favorite hidden spot. When you let me decide when I want cuddles, something feels right.
For you, maybe it’s trying a new restaurant, laughing with friends over a board game, hiking through beautiful scenery and taking in the views, or celebrating a goal you reached (Congratulations on finishing the Great Cycle Challenge!).
When something feels off to you—it bothers you, it irritates you, it just feels wrong—that’s your compass pointing away from it.
For me, when visiting humans won’t stop petting me after I walk away, I feel irritated. When I’m not getting enough playtime or my humans forget my evening treat, something feels off.
For you, maybe it’s that uncomfortable feeling when you agree with something you don’t believe just to avoid conflict. Or when you ignore your own needs to please other humans. Or that angry feeling when you see someone being treated unfairly.
Find the pattern
Start paying attention to what makes you feel good and what makes you feel off throughout the day. To get the most meaningful insights, keep going for at least a few days and capture the different situations in a notebook.
Then, look at all those situations. What keeps showing up? Find the pattern. That pattern reveals what matters to you—what’s calibrating your compass.
My pattern shows: having fun, connecting with you in my own way, getting my needs met, being independent. That’s what matters to me.
Your pattern shows: exploring and trying new things, treating everyone kindly, taking care of your needs, spending time with friends and family, and enjoying life. That’s what matters to you.
Your compass is calibrated by you.
Your compass is for you. What matters to you? What is important to you? What do you care about? What do you love? What is meaningful to you? What do you want to stand for?
Different things matter to different humans, so every compass works differently. You need to figure out how your compass works.
Humans get lost when they don’t follow their compass and instead head where they “should” go. To calibrate your compass, tune in to what truly matters to you and not what others expect or what you think you “should” care about. You chose what you want to be all about and what you want your life to be all about. It’s your compass, and you get to calibrate it.
Use your compass to guide you
When you wonder which direction to take or when you are in doubt about a decision, you can use your compass to find your way. Ask yourself, ” Does this fit with what matters to me?”
Should I tell the human I’m hurt by what they said? Your compass says: being honest with yourself and real connections matter to you. Pretending everything’s fine would feel wrong. Your compass points towards having that difficult conversation. Go and talk to the human.
If you follow your compass, you’ll fill your life with what matters to you. Life will feel right!
Whenever life feels off, you’ve strayed off the path. You’re neglecting something that matters to you. Use your compass to get back on track.
Now start paying attention. Notice how you feel about things today. Your compass is already there, working. Discover how it’s calibrated and let it guide you.
Yours,
Cat 🐾
P.S. Some humans will tell you your compass is broken or pointing the wrong way. Those humans are just upset your compass isn’t pointing the same direction as theirs. Your compass works perfectly for you. It’s not supposed to work for everyone.
P.P.S. Therapists do refer to those patterns that are calibrating your compass your values.
