The Pie of Life. Get the balance right.

Dear Human 💕,

I noticed that you don’t do much anymore beyond working, cuddling with me and the other human on the sofa, and sleeping. You’re avoiding all the other humans, you’re not cycling, the apartment is a bit of a mess. And you actually don’t seem to enjoy anything. While I enjoy all the extra time you are spending with me, your life is obviously out of whack right now. We need to do something about it.

I’ve observed that there are different areas that are important in a human’s life. I think of it as the Pie of Life.

  • Health: the time you spend to take care of yourself. That includes exercise, relaxation, grooming, routine medical check-ups, visiting the dentist. I know you’ve been avoiding the dentist.
  • Relationships: the time you spend with your partner, your family, your friends, your cat.
  • Fun: the time you spend having fun and enjoying life such as playing board games, human watching, watching me watch the squirrel, going to comedy shows, water slides, exploring & traveling.
  • Personal Development: the time you spend on your personal development and growth. Listening to non-fiction audiobooks, journaling, taking a class. And of course, therapy.
  • Career: the time you spend for your education, at work, and for professional development.
  • Adulting: the things you need to do as human adult. All those chores in the house, cleaning my litter box, paying bills, grocery shopping.

If you look at how much time you spend on activities in each of the areas and size the pieces to reflect the time spent, the pieces of the pie should reflect what’s important to you. Not all areas are equally important to different humans, so the pieces of the pie can have different sizes for different humans. For some humans their career is most important, for some it’s their relationships. All of the pieces need to have a decent size for a balanced life though.

What humans like to do in those different areas is very different. Some like running as exercise, some like cycling. Some like board games, some like dungeons and dragons. Some like to cook, some like to go out for dinner. Some like to walk a dog, some like to cuddle with a cat.

Same for cats. Some like to chase the red dot, some like to chase a ball. Some like to stay at home, some like to go on adventures with their human. Check out Nala the adventure cat biking through Europe on Instagram. I like snoozing in my cat penthouse.

I’ve been watching you and how you spend your time. I know you’re an ambitious high-achiever and that you’re passionate about your career, but your life is clearly not balanced. And you’re clearly not happy.

Take a look at how I spend my time. I am pretty happy with it. I have to admit my life is simpler than yours. As cat I don’t need to worry about a career to make money or any chores. I have humans to handle that for me. You will need to spend time in the areas, but those are not the ones that will make you happy.

So, take a step back and ask yourself how important the different areas are for you. Then, compare that to how you actually spend your time. Where are you not spending enough time? It seems connecting with your humans and activities that are fun deserve more time. Let’s think about some activities in the different areas to get you back to a balanced life.

Get the balance right.

Yours,
Cat 🐾

P.S. I will make sure you’re not spending that much time on your office chair anymore.
